“WHO DO PEOPLE SAY THAT I AM?” MK 8:27-33
Humbly submit your will to God (Thy Will be done) and consecrate yourself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Mary and Joseph.
Jesus and his disciples set out
for the villages of Caesarea Philippi.
Along the way he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say that I am?”
They said in reply,
“John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others one of the prophets.”
And he asked them,
“But who do you say that I am?”
Peter said to him in reply,
“You are the Christ.”
Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him.
He began to teach them
that the Son of Man must suffer greatly
and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed, and rise after three days.
He spoke this openly.
Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples,
rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan.
You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” MK 8:27-33
Today, Jesus reveals something about himself that no other religious leader ever reveals. Fr. Robert Barron, in his Catholicism video series, talks about the verses today in which Jesus asks, “Who do people say that I am?” I am refers to our being, our make up. ”I AM who AM” also refers to God or “Yahweh” in the Jewish Torah. No other religious leader or founder asks a question about their ontological make up, or being. Don’t forget this comes after Jesus has healed and cured many people and fed the 5,000. Then, Jesus is frustrated because the Apostles still don’t see or hear the message He is sending. Jesus is trying to show the Apostles and the world that He is the Messiah, the Son of the living God! Today, Jesus comes right out and says it!
““Who do people say that I am?”
They said in reply,
“John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others one of the prophets.”
And he asked them,
“But who do you say that I am?”
Peter said to him in reply,
“You are the Christ.””
This is the identity of Jesus Christ. The 2nd Person of the Trinity, human and divine, God made Man, Word made Flesh who dwells among us. Jesus later goes on to say that He must die and rise after 3 days. The reason this is so important is that Christian hope (Pope Francis catechized on this) is born in the resurrection. Jesus either is who He says He is or He is a liar and a blasphemer. If He is the latter, He has fooled the smartest and holiest people in the last 2,000 years. He rose from the dead to prove He is God and everything He taught us is Truth. Truth can’t contradict itself according to St. Thomas Aquinas. He has the Words of everlasting life.
So what’s the point? We have to make a decision. If we believe and give up our life for Christ, we are saved. If we don’t, what do we believe is the truth? What is life really about? If you don’t believe in something, you will fall for everything. Today, Jesus gives us some solid knowledge to form ourselves and understand our Christian identity. Our religion is not a set of rules to follow, it is a Risen Person who is God to fall in love with. This God is madly in love with His creation, so much so that He sent His only Son to be the one Sacrifice for all, and stays with us in His Holy Spirit. As baptized believers, we are never alone. Jesus grafted Himself onto us and breathed His Holy Spirit onto us.
After you fall in love with this Man, you will come to know the Father’s love. You will ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in each moment of your day and before you read the Scriptures each day. You will be so overwhelmed with His presence that you will want to share it with everyone you come in contact with each day. It is like a fire inside of you, that you have to share. In your suffering, you will ask this Man to be with you and He will comfort you because He knows all about suffering. You will ask Mary and Joseph to pray and intercede on your behalf, because Jesus never turns down a request from His mother and foster father. There is no more difficult question in life and there is no greater reward. That is the adventure of striving for holiness in the Christian life!
Today’s challenge: We are made in God’s image and likeness. The Divine became human, so the human could become divine. Through our baptism in dying with Christ and rising with Him in new life we are born again to become holy and fight Satan. Believe you have the power within you by Jesus Christ to fulfill your baptismal promises. Dialogue with others about why you believe what you believe.
Be a servant, become a saint!
#Christian YOLO
I feel like this is showing us that people can see lots of things as “gods”, such as cell phones, or movie stars, and don’t see who the true God is, don’t put him first. I think this is a reminder that the one true God is Jesus Christ, and we need to put him first and foremost.
We know that Jesus is God. The living God. Sometimes we don’t try to listen to him. He is our God that we should praise everyday.
We need to believe in Jesus and have faith in Him. If we are ever confused or want to talk to God, He will always be there for us.
“But who do you say that I am?” Peter said to him in reply, “You are the Christ.” Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him.
This scriture is telling us that when we are lost Jesus knows the way. Jesus always knows what’s best for us, he is the only way to make it to heaven
Jesus is asking peter who he thinks he is and peter believes that he is the Christ. Jesus tells him not to tell any one. no one had really claimed to be God and had any thing to back it up but Jesus made people believe with his actions and word.
He began to teach them
that the Son of Man must suffer greatly
and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed, and rise after three days.
This happens everyday at mass, but we don’t realize it. He is rejected by us, even though all we have to do is open our hearts to Him.
I think this scripture is about how Jesus doesn’t want us to proclaim him as the christ but he wants us to be virtues. He wants us to understand that Jesus was human and he was killed. He did not punish the people who hurt him. Jesus was put here as a role-model.
Even though our friends, family, or society may criticize the faith, we must follow God’s ways and continue our life in His path. He knows that he is rebuked, but He still loves us and cares for us, and will always forgive us. We must learn to not care what others think about the faith and instead try to spread the faith and love others as God loves us.
Jesus Christ is truly the Messiah. We need to know who Jesus is so we can grow closer to him. We need to reject all of Satan’s temptations so we may be closer to God and that we may go to Heaven.
“But who do you say that I am?” Peter said to him in reply, “You are the Christ.” Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him. This stood out to me because Jesus didn’t want people to know who he was. Jesus didn’t want them to know because He knew that God had a plan for Him. That plan was for Jesus to die and then on the third day rise and go to heaven. This is the part of why we believe in Him and why we go to mass to be in His Holy presence. Now we can spread the good news to everyone we come across with.
I think this Gospel is saying we need to know who Jesus is. He asks the apostles, “But who do you say that I am?” He is Christ.
what the scripture is telling me is that we should not think of jesus as any other person or relate him to anyone else. we should try to think like him or think better of him.
I think this gospel is talking about trust. Jesus took his followers to a place and he told them to trust were hes taking them. In life we need to be like the apostles act like them and follow Jesus like them then heaven is our reward.
This scripture is telling us that God teaches us the right things. He gives us commands and we should follow them.
I think this is saying that if we sometimes find ourselves falling away from Jesus, to sit down and have a normal conversation with him. This will build up your relationship with him. Once you fall in love with Jesus you will never turn back.
“Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” As we know, Jesus is perfect. He loves us even though we sin. We should all look up to Jesus and try to be like Him. We are going to be perfect though. The way we act is completely different than the way Jesus acts. Christ should be our idol, not our phones or another person.
“Get behind me, Satan” Jesus tells satan to get behind him. We need to follow Jesus’s example and tell satan to get behind us when we feel the temptation to sin. If we do, it will give us strength to not sin.
This scripture is talking about Jesus and the disciples and they are talking about how they can´t revel who they are because after him saying this peter started to act weird etc and this is telling us that Satan is never sleeping and he always wants us to the opposite of what we are supposed to be doing.
God is God. He is Love. He is everything we need. He is our hope. In him we find our identity. In him alone do we find our true selves.
I think the scripture is saying we must go through hardships and carry our individual crosses in order for good things to come out of it, just as Jesus did. We must also not gossip, for gossiping creates lies and makes us detach from the Father.
I think the Scripture is saying Jesus wants people to know who He is. Jesus wants people to understand Him better. I think if we pray and go to mass we will know Jesus better.
Today’s scripture is talking about Jesus asking what people think he is, just to say that his identity shouldn’t be revealed. We know that Jesus is the messiah and he says will happen is in fact true, but Peter rebukes Jesus. Instead of denying God and what he says he is, we should follow his word, unlike Peter.
Jesus is connected to Elijah, John the Baptist, and early prophets, He’s also greatly connected to us in our day to day life. We just need to accept his grace so He can help us save others with the word of God.
People start talking and start saying things about you or others or Jesus that aren’t even true. Which in many ways is wrong. We shouldn’t be making things up of people or saying things other people have told you if they aren’t true. We should respect one another.
Jesus asked the disciples who they thought He was. They had been talking about how people said Jesus was a prophet. Then He asks them “Who do you think I am?” and they say that He is the Christ. We need to have faith in Jesus as they did. We trust and know that He is the Christ. Just trust God.
It is saying that we don’t think before we do something. We need to pay attention to God more and listen to what He has to say to us. We might do what the devil is telling us to do instead of God.
I think that today’s scripture is telling us that we only need to impress God. What we can do to impress Him isn’t by buying cool things or dressing crazy it’s by spending time with Him and being a missionary through Christ.
Who is God? I know in my reflections I have said similar stuff before but is God the One that Truly Matters, or The One that I Guess We have to Obey. God is not someone who is watching over us limiting every second of our life so we can’t have fun. God is loving us and wanting us to have as much fun as we possibly can while loving him. I know I feel like I have to give up things all the time, but in reality we just need to give a little bit of our time up to the Lord for Prayer. So who is the Lord? He is the One that saves, heals, cares, longs for us, loves us with this love that nothing in the entire world could ever shut down.
I am inspired by this! Great reflection, Daylin!
This is Jesus saying he is who he is. This is the point where he is telling the apostles the things he’s going to have to go through and to see if they actually believe he is the savior of the world.
Jesus reveals who he is, not physically, but spiritually. He does this to try to get us to Heaven and to avoid the Devil’s temptations. Before making rational decisions, we must think carefully about which side we choose. So, whose side are you on?
We are sinners, and God is perfect. He is the only thing we live for, and He became human to save our souls from eternal suffering. When He asked the apostles who He is, they replied “ You are the Christ”. He is still fully divine while being fully human.
“But who do you say that I am?” We cant be luke warm in our faith its either fully aware or not at all we need to be fully aware
I think God is trying to tell us to believe in Him. 80 years is a short life compared to the eternal happiness we will have if we believe in him.
Who am I? That’s the question a lot of us are asking. Jesus even asked his apostles this question. We shouldn’t care what other people think of us we should only care of what God thinks of us.
“Who do people say that I am?” They said in reply, “John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.” “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said to him in reply, “You are the Christ.” This part of the scripture stuck out to me because most people think that Jesus isn’t really God and that is who says he is anybody but Christ. We need to be the people that are like Peter and say that Jesus really is Jesus and there are no other Gods.
Humbly submit your will to God (Thy Will be done) and consecrate yourself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Mary and Joseph.
It means to stop being selfish and prideful and submit yourself to God and think about God and pray to the holy family.
i like this because some people don’t understand the word of Christ and they say stuff against him and i think that this really symbolizes this
“Who do people say that I am?”
So many people called him different things that they didn’t know that he was the one.
After you fall in love with this Man, you will come to know the Father’s love. You will ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in each moment of your day and before you read the Scriptures each day. You should read the scriptures before you go to bed to have a flame burning inside of you every second of the day which means you have the Holy Spirit in you.
“Get behind me, Satan.
You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”This stood out to me because sometimes we act against God and Satan got what he wanted. We need to not be able to be tempted by Satan and follow God.
After you fall in love with this Man, you will come to know the Father’s love. You will ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in each moment of your day and before you read the Scriptures each day. You should read the scriptures before you go to bed to have a flame burning inside of you every second of the day, which means you have the Holy Spirit in you.
“Who do you say that I am?” We need to understand that Jesus is Jesus, and we cannot come close.God is omnipotent, Omniscient, and omnipresent. He is everywhere, knows everything, and is all powerful. We like to have things done out way, but we need to understand that God has a plan. We need to trust, have faith, and go along with that plan.
Humbly submit your will to God (Thy Will be done)
You have to submit yourself to God and show him that it is his will be done and not ours and that we are willing to do as he says and put him first.
Today the scripture says to me that Jesus wanted to see if his disciples truly knew what he will have to go through. He wanted to make sure so that they were ready to preach the word when the time came. He taught them to help us because he loves us.
God wants us to see the messagae he is sending.
What stuck out to me is that we have to make a decision. This stuck out to me because that decision that we have to make is if we believe that Christ saved us and if we don’t believe we have to figure out what we believe in and is it the truth
“Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” God has Authority over everyone, even Satan. Satan is what tempts us to do evil and makes us think poorly of others/ourselves. We need to turn to god and give him everything.
What stuck out to me is that we have to make a decision. This stuck out to me because that decision that we have to make is if we believe that Christ saved us and if we don’t believe we have to figure out what we believe in and is it the truth.
I think that this scripture is saying is that we should trust God. If we have trust in him everything will br alright. We need to be able to trust him to go to him with our needs. And he will always be there for us.
I think that this is talking about how we should trust God. All he wants is for us to be able to come to him with our worries. He wants to help us but first we have to be able to trust him if we want to go to him for help.
We are lost and God is the only one who knows the way. He is not gonna be the one who does all the work to get us to Heaven, but He gives us more than what we need to make it to Heaven. We earn Heaven but God gives us all the instructions to get there.
