Humbly submit your will to God (Thy Will be done) and consecrate yourself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Mary.
Jesus departed to the mountain to pray,
and he spent the night in prayer to God.
When day came, he called his disciples to himself,
and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named Apostles:
Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew,
James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus,
Simon who was called a Zealot,
and Judas the son of James,
and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
And he came down with them and stood on a stretch of level ground. A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem
and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon
came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases;
and even those who were tormented by unclean spirits were cured. Everyone in the crowd sought to touch him
because power came forth from him and healed them all. Lk 6:12-19
Jesus models prayer for us today. He prays through the night before He is about to make a big decision, who would be the first bishops of the Church. Who would be willing to die for Him and His message of salvation? First, we recognize we need God, He gives us our purpose and direction. He never misleads us, He loves us more than we love ourselves, and He wants us to know His Will. A dialogue with God requires listening while putting yourself in His presence. ”The fruit of prayer is faith, the fruit of faith is love, the fruit of love is service, the fruit of service is peace” says St. Mother Teresa.
The 12 disciples were uneducated Jews made up of fishermen, a tax collector (public sinner who would be excommunicated from the Church today), and a Zealot (a group in secret who wanted to overthrow the Roman government from it’s control of Israel). Andrew, the first Apostle, was a follower of John the Baptist. He brought his brother Peter to Jesus. Each one after being filled with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost died a martyr’s death. John died a white martyr’s death because legend has it they could not kill him.
All of us are baptized in the same waters as these 12 men. We are all called for a specific mission in the Church. We have a role. God made us to keep His Church alive and to bring Christ to our families, classmates, and community in this place and time. We all make up the mystical body of Christ. We are all called to be saints. Pray and ask God what your purpose and mission is. Be ready for a battle, an adventure, a life filled with joy and probably more suffering than you want. The rewards are eternal!
Today’s challenge: Make good decisions because you took time to pray. Reflect on the Scriptures and listen to God who guides us to Truth. Stop trusting yourself and trust in God with complete confidence He has a plan for you, then live in peace.
