Today’s Gospel is hard to understand if you don’t look at it from a spiritual perspective. Equal pay for equal work, it’s only fair in human terms. If you don’t work you don’t eat, that is a fact of life. What we need to understand is God’s perspective. The Master (God) knows the laborers He invites last that only work for twenty minutes will go home hungry if He only pays them very little. Fr. Voss had a great sermon on envy at SEAS today. The cure for envy is generosity. God’s generosity will never be outdone and He will take care of His people. He is always loving and giving no matter what. Think about how many times you have been envious of your parents or siblings because they received something you didn’t. Or they get to do things you don’t. Or they don’t have to do things you have to. Now we see our envy. Look around and list 10 things God has given you that others don’t have. Now think about what God gets or deserves from us for giving us His Son or all the blessings we have. It’s not fair for God more than anyone but He gives and gives and gives without asking for anything in return except to do the same for others. WOW! Makes sense now!
