Jesus said to his disciples:
“I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth,
so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.
The person who is trustworthy in very small matters
is also trustworthy in great ones;
and the person who is dishonest in very small matters
is also dishonest in great ones.
If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth,
who will trust you with true wealth?
If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another,
who will give you what is yours?
No servant can serve two masters.
He will either hate one and love the other,
or be devoted to one and despise the other.
You cannot serve God and mammon.”
The Pharisees, who loved money,
heard all these things and sneered at him.
And he said to them,
“You justify yourselves in the sight of others,
but God knows your hearts;
for what is of human esteem is an abomination in the sight of God.” Lk 16:9-15
Jesus reminds us today of the greatest desires of the human heart that can be easily snatched away or distracted by earthly material things. First, honesty and trustworthiness. A firm hand shake and knowing someone would always be by your side in your family, school, and business. There are still many of these people around. Find them and befriend them. Second, money. Jesus makes it clear “No servant can serve two masters”. We cannot love God and love money. We can make money to support our families, but we must also share it. We must not love it and allow it to control our lives. No material item can be taken with us to our spiritual homeland, nothing but love of God, others, and how we treated one another. God knows our hearts and our intentions and “for what is of human esteem is an abomination in the sight of God”. What do you esteem in this life that God finds an abomination? Give glory to God and work on your relationships. The greatest desire of the human heart is God, love, heaven. Don’t be distracted!
