“WHAT SORT OF MAN IS THIS, WHOM EVEN THE WINDS AND THE SEA OBEY?” MT 8:23-27
Humbly submit your will to God (Thy Will be done) and consecrate yourself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Mary and Joseph.
Sometimes I am full of worry and anxiety. It is usually fear of the unknown. I can’t always trust myself or those around me, so today we learn where we should turn in times of distress. Jesus is Lord. The Apostles had good reason to be worried and anxious as they were in a violent storm at sea.
They came to the Lord who was sleeping through the storm. Jesus responds, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?” What happens next would have been astounding to see. Jesus rebukes the winds and the sea and “there was great calm.” The point is when we put our full trust in the Lord, especially in times of great anxiety, He fills us with a great calm.
This trust in the Lord can only be built if you spend time with Him doing positive things together. With God, this is prayer, every day at the same time/place, especially reading and reflecting on Scripture, going to Mass, and Adoration. Otherwise, we make God into what we want Him to be and we can be tempted to turn Him into a slot machine who just gives us what we want.
The problem with that is we are searching for who we are either in our Creator who has a plan for us or what we think we need based on the culture we are living in (this is highly influenced by the news and social media today; more so than ever before in human history).
God is in control and never moves. God never changes. He is love which forgives, gives mercy, and is just. When we make Him the center of our lives, we have a great calm in the greatest of storms throughout our life. We must expect the storms, but how we handle them effects all of the relationships around us and most importantly our relationship with God.
Total and complete trust and submission to God is impossible for us weak humans, but God took care of that, too! He gave us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity. Ask God each day to increase your faith, it is necessary for the lost soul to get to heaven.
Today’s challenge: The next time you are in distress with worry and anxiety, offer up the prayers, “Jesus, I trust in you.” “I believe, help my unbelief.”
Be a servant, be a saint today!
