A Pharisee in the Sanhedrin named Gamaliel,
a teacher of the law, respected by all the people,
stood up, ordered the Apostles to be put outside for a short time,
and said to the Sanhedrin, “Fellow children of Israel,
be careful what you are about to do to these men.
So now I tell you,
have nothing to do with these men, and let them go.
For if this endeavor or this activity is of human origin,
it will destroy itself.
But if it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy them;

you may even find yourselves fighting against God.”
They were persuaded by him.
After recalling the Apostles, they had them flogged,
ordered them to stop speaking in the name of Jesus,
and dismissed them.

So they left the presence of the Sanhedrin,
rejoicing that they had been found worthy
to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.

And all day long, both at the temple and in their homes,
they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the Christ, Jesus.  Acts 5:34-42

The Catholic Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, has endured 2,000 years of persecution, heresy, and corruption.  How can this be?  It comes from God and it will not be able to be destroyed.  Jesus tells us this when He tells Peter and the Apostles that the Devil will never prevail against the Church doors before He ascends into heaven.
The Apostles were rejoicing for being flogged.  If you know how a person was flogged by a Roman soldier it is not pleasant.  Who rejoices for suffering?  Christians, saints, the early Apostles because they knew what joy was.  Joy comes from suffering, eternal happiness is the reward of the Passion of Christ.  Be a fighter and sacrifice, die to self (don’t give into every desire and temptation but fight), carry your crosses resting in God’s peace and grace.
Last, they continued to spread the Good News, we don’t have to stay miserable, through Jesus Christ we are saved, we can repent, be baptized, receive the Holy Spirit and fight our fallen human nature and the temptations of the Devil with God’s saving grace.
In the Gospel today, Jesus feeds the 5,000.  It is a foreshadowing of the first Mass, the Last Supper.  Jesus feeds the 5,000 with a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish.  Today, he continues to feed His people with the Eucharist.  Jesus has a host made for you each day.  Don’t condemn yourself by sinning or not making Mass a priority in your life.  It is the source and summit of our faith, you are receiving Jesus Christ, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.  You are receiving the graces you need to fight sin, our fallen human nature, the temptations of the Devil, and unify ourselves to be another-Christ. We must go forth and love.  Pope Francis said, “Don’t expect life to be easy, but full of love.”
