Today, the Pharisees tried to test Jesus by asking Him for a sign to back up His claims of being the Messiah. This frustrates Jesus since He has been so plain and clear. He has preached openly in the synagogue speaking the Truth in being the One who has come to fulfill the Scriptures, He has made the blind see and the deaf hear, He has cast out demons, He has raised people from the dead fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy about the Messiah. So, Jesus rightfully, “sighs from the depth of His Spirit” and tells the Pharisees and us, “Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”

Today, many students ask me why God does not come to us today and speak to us like He did in the Old Testament. Would it really matter? What would He say that has not already been revealed by His Son on Earth? Salvation has been granted; God’s plan has been revealed, there is no more need for signs and wonders. Look around! Where is God present? Where has He left Himself behind until He returns? The Scriptures, in ordained priests, in the Sacraments-literally in the Eucharist (we often miss the significance of this), nature, and the one we miss the most-inside of us if we are baptized with the water and the Spirit. It is absolutely necessary for us to take time and pray early each morning before we start our day to remember who God is and who we are. God gives us perspective, peace, His Word, and hope right inside of us and in the Scriptures. Those who need a sign have allowed the deception of the Devil to veil their minds from the Truths that are sitting right in their laps. God is always near, always loving, always forgiving, always giving you signs if you look in the right places that He has given to you.

Today, read the Scriptures, sit in silence, and start believing in God with great faith that does not require signs.
