Prayer Prompt before reading LK 8:16-18: Come, Holy Spirit, teach me how to pray, interpret the Scriptures for me so that I may know the Truth about who God the Father is and God the Son so that I may know who I am.
“FOR THERE IS NOTHING HIDDEN THAT WILL NOT BECOME VISIBLE, AND NOTHING SECRET THAT WILL NOT BE KNOWN AND COME TO LIGHT.” LK 8:16-18
Humbly submit your will to God (Thy Will be done) and consecrate yourself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Mary and Joseph.
In the parable of the lamp, Jesus teaches us more about our Christian identity. After we have come to listen and understand the Word, the Good News or Gospel which is God the Father sent His only Son to Die for the consequences of our sins, He rose from the dead, and this world is not all there is, there is a spiritual realm we are all destined to call home with the Father who loves us intimately, we must not keep this Good News to ourselves.
It is amazing what one lit candle can do in a dark room. St. Francis says, “All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.” Jesus is the light and He grafted Himself onto us at baptism. We are called to be the light now.
Jesus also teaches us that we cannot hide our actions. Some people think that they should get to do whatever they want in the privacy of their own homes or in their private lives. God sees everything. We can’t fool God. We cannot hide our sin.
Jesus wants us to stop trying to hide our sin and face it head on, persevere, and conquer it with His grace. Jesus is the light which helps us see our darkness/sin so we can recognize and accept it.
Today, Jesus teaches us that His Word the Truth, cannot be hidden. It is timeless, living and effective. He shared it with the crowds but more importantly 12 very specific chosen Apostles. Each one of them, minus Judas, went to their deaths preaching the Word.
Our role is to learn the Word, understand it or search until we do understand it, live it, and pass it on to the next generation with patience and perseverance. Some of us are called to bring the Word to new lands as missionaries overseas, but most of us are called to be missionaries in our homes and bring the Word to those who live with us.
Today’s challenge: Read the Word, understand the Word, spread the Word (through actions, use words if necessary-St. Francis)
Be a servant, become a saint!
