“THERE IS SOMETHING GREATER THAN JONAH HERE.” LK 11:29-32

Humbly submit your will to God (Thy Will be done) and consecrate yourself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Mary and Joseph.

Prayer Prompt before reading LK 11:29-32: Come, Holy Spirit, teach me how to pray, interpret the Scriptures for me so that I may know the Truth about who God the Father and God the Son are so that I may know who I am.

Jesus continues to explain to the crowds gathered around him that He must die and rise to save us. The wisdom of Solomon was powerful, the preaching of repentance by Jonah to the Ninevites helped save a huge city, but Jesus teaches us today that He is God and through His death and resurrection He will set us free from our sin, conquer death, and defeat Satan.

Today, Jesus personally asks each one of us to stop searching in other places for peace, joy, happiness. He alone has the answers. He alone is enough. This is a part of every humans understanding of their existence and purpose. We are sinners who are fundamentally broken due to the Fall and we need a Savior. We do things we wished we didn’t and need to be forgiven. We experience guilt, shame, and embarrassment. We desire to be more like Jesus and care for others but often fall short.

Listen in prayer. Invite Him into your daily struggles, suffering, prayer, and joys. We are a distracted people and we look in all of the wrong places for happiness. God alone is pure joy, much greater than happiness. He alone gives us what our hearts long for, Himself. Love, Truth, purpose, a direction each day we wake. May He see our belief in Him by the way we treat others, in our prayer, and by fasting.

Today’s challenge: Stop searching for happiness in all of the wrong places. Christ alone gives us what we are looking for. Learn to be still and listen to Christ in your heart. “Ask and it shall be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be open to you.” MT 7:7

Be a servant, be a saint today!

Jesus today flat out tells people that he is God, and that he has to die. The people have trouble believing this, and even his own disciples do not really know what he is telling them about being the messiah. He only wants what is best for us, and he wants us to believe in him. Despite being his students, the disciples are limited by human knowledge, and Jesus understands that. He still wants us to try to hear what he has to say though.

In this Gospel, I believe Jesus is trying to tell us that as
Jonah was a role model for the people in his time. He
would also be a role model for his time and all the time to come.

Jesus is saying that he is always going to be there for us, happy times, sad times, and tough times. As it says in the reflection, “He alone has the answers. He alone is enough.” This stood out to me because Jesus is our key to happiness.

There is something here greater then Jonah. This means that Jesus is, Jesus will always be better than everyone in the world. Doing something you like, like playing sports is good but there is still more in Jesus to get out of then you will get out of playing sports. God is the center of all life and what we do on earth may be good but it may be bad but either way our ultimate purpose is to get back to Him in Heaven.

“This generation is an evil generation” this phrase is the one thing I need people to really understand. This phrase is the truth, our generation is evil with all those things we do in the world today. the Father,Son and Holy Spirit are the most important things to have faith in in this generation because if you don’t have these than you don’t have faith.

Jesus died on the cross for our sins and people still don’t believe he exists or believe that God is real. People are cruel and mean about Christianity and that’s not how it should be. Everyone should be preaching the gospel talking about how excited they are to go to heaven and see God.

In the crowd people are demanding a sign. They want to know if this exists or not. Well us today, people want the exact truth instead of believing. But us Catholics don’t need a sign. Because we know he is there and is always there. During adoration for me I know he is there I just want to feel him, to know that he has rested within me. As I am resting in him. We are safe in him. Whenever we feel his presence we are filled with belief and hope that we are saved. A sign is for telling you this. Like a message. The Messenger of God which is the Holy spirit who will descend upon you and give you the knowledge. So let us ask God to give us his presence and a sign to know that we are in Him.

I think in today’s Gospel Jesus is trying to show people that he is the messiah not any of the prophets. Also I think that Jesus is showing us the flaws of humanity he says that this is an evil generation but no matter what generation he’s talking about its true humanity is always flawed and evil and we need to overcome that and be better than the rest of humanity as Catholics not by boasting that we pray or loudly saying how much we donate or fast but by being nice to those who aren’t nice back and by following all of the beatitudes and donating secretly and praying in secret. It’s like that one Gospel verse where Jesus is talking about how the people who loudly pray aren’t the ones getting the better reward later in that chapter it says to be so secretive in prayer that not even your left hand knows what your right hand is doing.

I think this scripture is talking about how Jesus is even greater than the past signs because Jesus is literally the sign, and people just have no idea that he is the son of man. It says that the generation of Ninevites will judge this greedy generation that was sent the son of man. I think that we are also kind of like the generation that was there when Jesus was on Earth. I think that our generation of humans could have the son of man on earth and not even realize it. Or they would believe someone else was the son of man. I think that we wouldn’t know if somebody was the son of man in the same way that they thought it would be someone worldly rich but he was spiritually rich. I think people now would just think that there was a homeless person on drugs and they would try to steer clear of him. There would be people that would recognize that it was him but not enough to spread the word. Or there would be because of the internet.

Jesus is saying that He will be the sign for that generation. Jesus is pure and holy and loving and we need to strive to be more like Him in our everyday lives. We should help the people around us and this is a good thing to do especially during lent. We need to always help those around us no matter who they are. Jesus helped the sinners and the people who were cast out away from society and rejected. Jesus didn’t let anything come between Him and those who needed Him. We should also be an example of this and follow in Jesus’s footsteps.

“Today, Jesus personally asks each one of us to stop searching in other places for peace, joy, happiness. He alone has the answers. He alone is enough. ” Today Jesus is telling me to stop focusing on other things because you think they make you happy, but focus on Him. We get ourselves trapped in a place that we thought we could find happiness, but instead its leading us away from happiness. Soon enough or however long it will take you will figure out that there isn’t anything that can make you as happy than being with God. He died for us and did many other things yet to avoid Him. The more we avoid Him the worse our lives are going to get, but the closer you get to Him the more you life will be complete. Also just because you have gotten closer to Him doesn’t mean that your not going to get anything that wants to pull you down, but it means that no matter what you wont let that effect you and your love for God. He will help you if you just trust Him then He will be your way out of this earth. There is nothing more that we could ask for then to be happy right, so follow in His footsteps and trust Him for that should lead you to true happiness.

There was a crowd of people around Jesus. Some people really believed in Him, like His mom and the Twelve Apostles. Others didn’t believe and wanted more proof, a sign from Heaven. Jesus said He wouldn’t give them a flashy sign, but only the sign of Jonah. Jonah was swallowed by a whale and after three days came back. Jesus would also suffer, die, and rise after three days. He didn’t show Himself to everyone, but to those who already believed. The lesson is that faith is personal, not always about big signs. Real change starts inside our hearts, not outside. We should look at the cross and choose to follow Jesus. By doing this, we can find new life and change inside us. Pray for God’s help to follow Jesus this Lent.

“Listen in Prayer” to me this stands out because it shows that we have to listen to God, we can’t be the only ones talking, when we pray it has to be a conversation, a conversation between us and God. He will speak to us we just have to listen to what He is trying to say even if it doesn’t make sense at the moment, we have to trust Him.

I think what God means is that temptation is something easy to fall into especially nowadays and we need to resist the urge to do what is wrong and think about Jesus and what he did for us and all he has saved us from. Jesus taking on our sins was the biggest sacrifice and for us to not treat him as if he did is unreasonable.

“This generation is an evil generation”. This stuck out to me because, our generation is full of evil everywhere. It is hard to ignore it all and sometimes we even get caught up in it. But we have to find Jesus, we have to seek Jesus among all the evil. Jesus can be found in the center of all the bad, and we need to see it.

our generation doesn’t believe just off of faith, we want some sort of proof or something we can look up on our technology to tell us Jesus is real. But Jesus has given us many signs, like us being alive because if Jesus wasn’t real then we wouldn’t have free will or be living.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus says that “This generation is an evil generation”. What He means by this is that we think that looking at our screens is going to make us happy instead of looking at Jesus Himself. Jesus is the only thing that will make us happy. We don’t need devices to make us happy, but instead, we need Jesus to make us happy.

“This generation is an evil generation” We are in a generation where everything we do is surrounded by social media and lies. Jesus did on the cross for us and wants to save us so we need to start turning to him. So instead of spending our time on social media we need to start building a relationship with Jesus.

What I got from this is when Jesus said “I must die and rise again”. I took away that sometimes things must go bad in order for them to go better. For example, sometimes our faith can veer off the rightful path for a little while, but then it can get back on and be even better than before. It just takes time.

He is God and through His death and resurrection He will set us free from our sin, conquer death, and defeat Satan. It is crazy to think that God has walked one earth. He lived like we do and has to go through things that we have to go through in our daily life. He goes through the smallest and biggest things. He set us free from sin, opened the gates to heaven for us so we could see the Father.

He did this for us so we can not waste it.

Why must we look everywhere for joy or happiness? It isn’t necessary. Our true happiness lies with God. He will always be with us no matter what is happening around us inside our minds and hearts. We were baptized so we can become children of God, but we aren’t spending our time with Him. Taking our time to pray to God will give us true happiness, unlike searching for it.

What I think Jesus is trying to tell us is that there is a lot of things that can tempt us to do bad things in life, especially on social media. So with that we need to keep trying our best and not let things tempt us into doing wrong from right. Yes, there can be good and useful apps on social media so we need to stay on those apps instead of going to the bad apps, because social media is one of the things in our life that make us sin the most.

I think that the gospel is trying to tell us is that he is the key to success. He is the one that gives us joy happiness and life. We need God in our life and without him we are nothing. The only thing we need in life is him. So why don’t we praise him or go to mass once a week? Because of the same old excuse “I have plans that day”. Sometimes you might actually have plans but other times you just make a excuse so you don’t have to go. We are taking the same steps as Adam and Eve did when they ate the apple. We need to go to mass and speak with God and not mess around. If we all went to mass then we could all find peace within us. So we should take the steps to go to heaven and not take the elevator to hell. Do what God you want you to do and not what the devil wants you to do.

“This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it.” Today this quote stuck out to me. Jesus tells us that our generation is evil, but we want a sign to do better. Sometimes we ask Jesus to give us a sign or give us something, but it will not be given to us because it is not God’s will for us. We have to be open to his will and we must actually try to do better when we ask for forgiveness. We can’t say we are sorry, but then don’t do anything to prove it. When we are sorry we will try our hardest to stop sinning and do our best.

“because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.” Today, Jesus is condemning the people for looking for great signs when He is the sign. He compares them to the people of Ninevah, who repented when they heard Jonah’s teachings, but He is much greater and more powerful than Jonah, and yet the people around Him aren’t repenting. We are called to repent to the Lord. We don’t need great signs or physical things, but simply just understanding and faith that He is God, and He is there.

“Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.” In the story of Jonah God sends him to tell the ninevites to repent. The city of Nineva is a very sinful city in the bible, and Jonah is scared to enter into the city. Jesus was similar to Jonah because he tells us to repent, just like John the Baptist did.

Jonah was in the belly of a whale but after 3 days he got spit back out, like the son of man he will die but rise again on the third day.

To take this bible passage into more modern terms, I feel like Jesus is saying that there is something greater here on this earth for us than what we believe or who we believe to be great in this generation. There is greater faith within our reach. There is a greater love to be given and received. There is a God greater than us but still chose to die for us, the lesser people.
There is so much more to the lives we are living now. There’s so much more meaning to the things we do and say than we realize. I think if all of us really took time to just step back and try to put into perspective the greatness we should all be striving for, we’d be so intimidated. And I think that’s rational because we really can’t achieve it on our own. But that’s the thing, we don’t have to. We simply have to strive for the greatness that God has already achieved, the greatness that he is willing to boost us up into if we surrender to him.

The scripture is saying that if we turn away from evil and anything else that causes us to sin and instead turn to God, we will not be perished. During Lent, most people fast from things that they either do a lot or like. The fast gives us a chance to spend that time with God instead and to grow closer to Him without having distractions that take us away from God.

“This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it” What I get from this is that people from our generation think that some sign will just suddenly be given to them to come to Christ. While that has probably happened to people before, what matters is if we want to come to Christ. If we don’t want to come to Christ then how is he just gonna enter the locked doors of our heart. We need to open up our hearts to Jesus and bring ourselves closer to him.

God is telling us here that Jesus must die to fulfill his prophecy. He calls the generation evil. Jesus had to die for our sins so that he may rise again and open up Heaven for us. When Jesus says that there is something greater than Solomon, he refers to himself. Solomon cannot die and rise himself up to save our sins, but Jesus can. We must take a break from whatever is distracting us from God and spend time with Jesus. Jesus loves it when we spend time with him. We must follow the ways of Christ and teach others. We should also learn to be humble, for God is the most High, most powerful.
