Humbly submit your will to God (Thy Will be done) and consecrate yourself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Mary and Joseph.
There was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now there is in Jerusalem at the Sheep Gate
a pool called in Hebrew Bethesda, with five porticoes. In these lay a large number of ill, blind, lame, and crippled.
One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.
When Jesus saw him lying there
and knew that he had been ill for a long time, he said to him,
“Do you want to be well?”
The sick man answered him,
“Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool
when the water is stirred up;
while I am on my way, someone else gets down there before me.”
Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your mat, and walk.”
Immediately the man became well, took up his mat, and walked.
Now that day was a sabbath.
So the Jews said to the man who was cured,
“It is the sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to carry your mat.”
He answered them, “The man who made me well told me,
‘Take up your mat and walk.’“
They asked him,
“Who is the man who told you, ‘Take it up and walk’?”
The man who was healed did not know who it was,
for Jesus had slipped away, since there was a crowd there.
After this Jesus found him in the temple area and said to him,
“Look, you are well; do not sin any more,
so that nothing worse may happen to you.”
The man went and told the Jews
that Jesus was the one who had made him well.
Therefore, the Jews began to persecute Jesus
because he did this on a sabbath. JN 5:1-16
When Jesus is not preaching, it is interesting, being the Son of Man (God on earth) what company he decides to spend time with. Jesus only spends 3 years of his 33 year life revealing the Divine Truths of the Father necessary for salvation to us. We find Jesus with the ill, blind, lame, and crippled. Why did Jesus choose this man among many? Jesus knew people’s hearts. This man had been ill for 38 years and he had no one to help him. This man knew how to suffer, must have had hope, and believed Jesus could help him.
Suffering for 38 years! If I suffer for more than an hour, even 30 minutes, heck even for an instant, I want to be relieved. This is part of our nature, our bodies hate to suffer. Jesus even proves this himself in the Agony of the Garden saying, “Father, if Thou art willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Thine be done.” Lk 22:42. If we ask God to reveal His heart to us, we will find that love likes to suffer.
God sent His only Son into the world to save us, not condemn us by dying on a cross after suffering the Passion. Love likes to suffer and suffering brings joy, therefore love brings joy. Think about it, Jesus was the happiest, holiest, most joyful Man on earth when he died on the cross. He had the mission to save humanity, our need is filled by this action the Father asked of Him. He completed it and it required a ton of suffering!
Martyrs and saints, who spent their lives asking Jesus to reveal His heart to them and reflecting on the Passion of Christ learned this great paradox-suffering brings joy and reveals Christ’s heart. Therefore, they spent their lives fasting, praying, and inducing pain upon themselves. Martyr means “witness”. They were witnesses of Christ suffering even to the point of death. They went to their death with joy to suffer because they understood Christ’s heart and wanted to suffer with Him. They knew this brought everlasting life, but more importantly they wanted to love Jesus back for His love of them. Perfect love has no fear (1JN 4:18), even fear of death.
Amazing! I fall into worldly ways of comfort and luxury every day. I need to learn from Jesus, the saints and martyrs and find ways to become poor, blind, weak, and ill in my life so I can partake in the love of Christ and love Him back. Christ on the cross gives us a reason to suffer, bear our daily crosses, and take the risk of loving. Love is giving our whole self, body and soul, to another in the most intimate way.
Christ, our perfect model, teaches us how to suffer by giving us himself, body, blood, soul, and divinity on the Cross and remains with us to be intimate with Him in the Eucharist. What an amazing God! We find God in the ill, poor, and suffering. If we find ourselves with the ill, poor, or suffering today, may we embrace them like Christ. You don’t have to look far, they are in the same room as you right now!
Today’s challenge: Suffer, love Christ back, and experience peace and joy. Go to confession, reconcile yourself with God, and be ready to fight and suffer for Christ. Suffer with others (compassion). You will never regret it for all eternity!
Be a servant, Become a saint!

I think this is saying that no matter how broken, weak, lame, you are, Jesus will always be with you and help you through everything that’s going on in your life. Even if it’s the worst torture, or just a minor inconvenience of the week, Jesus is gonna be there with you every step of the way even if you can’t feel it or see it. He can help you through anything, even if it’s just his presence being with you.
Making excuses for your own choices is worse than anything because you have the choice to go out and do something that you have been able to do, there is no “accidents”.
This scripture is saying that God can heal all if you dare to ask. To believe and trust in God means giving your self up for him and knowing he’s always with you and listening to you. Loving God and choosing to believe him with our own free will, will send us down the right path to heaven.
God has saved us from our sins, yet we continue to deny Him over and over again. He never stops loving us, yet we still run and try to hide in the dark. Even out of all of these, He continues to love us and to want no harm for us. Yet we denied Him, and by our sins, we put him on the cross to die. We are all equals and must treat each other as such.
I think the scripture means that no matter how much you lie and hide the truth it will come out. God will know the truth always. You might as well tell the truth no matter how bad. The truth is better for your soul. All God wants us to do is make it to heaven, and the way you get there is fighting sin.
We tend to make excuses when we don’t want to do something. Even so, Jesus helps us anyway. As humans, we’re not perfect, but even with those imperfections, God and Jesus do not give up on us.
What reached out to me was when it said, “do not sin any more, so that nothing worse may happen to you”. The worst thing that can happen in life to us is sin. Life would be perfect without sin, which is why we need to avoid sin at all costs.
I think this scripture is saying that we can’t make excuses. We just need to own up to what we did wrong instead of just making excuses. I feel like when we make them it takes less pressure off of us, but sometimes that’s not good. My favorite line from the passage is,”One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been ill for a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be well?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up;”
Today Jesus is trying to say that we can talk and raise people up even if we do not know them so we can go and help them to have better day and so that we can also be closer with Jesus by spreading his words to those people.
This scripture is saying ¨Do you want to be well?¨ We all want to live a happy life, but why do we forget the most happy part of life? God is the most happiest part of our life! So if you want to be well, than look to God, for healing, forgiveness and hope! God can do anything, In this is scripture God healed a guy who was sick for 38 years, if God can heal the sick than God can heal our soul!
This Scripture is like saying no one helped a man that was ill for 38 years and like everyday people walked past him and didn’t help this this did probably happen but when Jesus saw him he decide to stand up and help him he said “do you want to be well” and the man was like yes i want to be healed this is like a representation of our faith how we should help other get closer to the church.
In the Gospel Jesus helps a man that has been sick for 38 years and no one helped him. It’s hard to believe that no one helped this man for 38 years. We can’t make excuses in our life or it’ll be our life. If we don’t want to do something we make an excuse to get out of it and that’s not good. We need to face the challenge and do what we’re told to do.
In this Gospel it tells us that we should not make excuses. Jesus asks the man if he wants to be well but then the man responds with an excuse. Another thing it tells us to do is that we should do good any day. The pharisees tells Jesus that He is not allowed to heal on the sabbath but Jesus still does it anyway because He is doing God’s work.
In todays reading “DO YOU WANT TO BE WELL?” stuck out to me as well. I think it stuck out to me because we can pray but there is a difference between real prayer and just praying because someone told you too. And “DO YOU WANT TO BE WELL?” to me means we have to actually pray from our hearts that is how we prove that we want to be well and go tot heaven.
This scripture is telling us to help those in need.
It’s saying that you have to stop using excuses for what you don’t want to do. If we use an excuse for the rest of your life you will never make it in life. You can’t make an excuse to not go to mass if you can’t get close to God.
Jesus talked to the cripple and asked him if he wanted to be well which seemed like a stupid question but the cripple had been sitting by the well for 38 years and h could never find a way to get water. Jesus asked him this question because he hadn’t tried to get well him self.
This scripture is telling us to not make excuses. The blind man couldn’t make it to the bath for all of his life. He said that as an excuse for what he had not done. I think this sets an example for us today, to not make excuses for what we haven’t done like doing our chores or helping our siblings with something. We often forget that our lives aren’t meant for us but for others.
Jesus knows everything about us. He knows our thoughts, feelings, and intentions. He knew that the sick man didn’t want to be healthy. He just wanted to see if the man would tell the truth. Jesus knew the man wanted to keep his comfortable life. Why should he when Jesus dies on the cross for us.
The man was trying to get somewhere right next to him and he still could not get there it was an excuse. He never tried to he just waited, so why did Jesus help him? Because he loves all of us even when we sin against him.
Today the sick man made an excuse about never being able to go down to the pool even though he had 38 years. We need to learn a lesson from him because we need to take action on the right because if we don’t we will never get better. God never waited to grow to the Lord, so why should we wait and make excuses?
Do we really want to be well? Do we want to tear away from our bad habits and submit ourselves to God? Do we want to worship him and have pure souls? WE choose our own paths. We can either walk away from God and suffer, or walk towards God and have eternal life.
If we want to be better in prayer then we have to try. We can’t ask God for everything. If we want something to be done that we can do then we can do it. God is not our slave. He does do miracles for us but we should not be a bigger burden than we already are.
This scripture is telling us that Jesus will forgive us, but expects us to not sin as much after being forgiven. When we go to confession we should not just sin right after or we are showing no respect toward Jesus.
what scripture is telling me is that we should try to heal others who are sick or hurt. we also shouldnt make excuses for why we cant do anything.
We all have our own suffering that we deal with whether it be physical or mental, God is always there and He has a plan. God knows what He is doing because He created us, and we just need to turn to Him when we need anything because He loves us so much.
To me this Gospel is telling me that he Jesus is not preaching, it is interesting, being the Son of Man.
Don’t use excuses to justify your sins. The man in the Gospel used excuses to tell Jesus that is 38 years, he no one ever helped him get the the pool. That is an excuse. If he really wanted to be healed he would have found someone to carry him. Don’t be like the man in the Gospel, do not justify your sins.
What stood out to me was, “Do you want to be well?” We heard this in mass today and it’s true we should ask ourselves everyday, “Do you want to be well?” It’s important because we want to be with Jesus in Heaven someday and if we ask ourselves this then we will eventually make it to heaven. God is going to be there for us and we will be ready.
I think today’s scripture passage is trying to tell us that we need to spend time with Jesus. Jesus had to suffer great pain for a long time, and we complain about the little things we have to suffer from.
In Scripture, Jesus heals a man that was suffering for 38 years. He healed him. Jesus takes away our sins (our suffering). Jesus can heal us too.
This piece of Scripture is telling me that God loves us unconditionally, but we just have to choose if we will accept His love or not. “Do you want to be well?” is like Jesus saying, “Do you want to be loved?” and it’s our choice whether to accept His love or not.
You must be honest with yourself and Jesus. If you keep dong the same sin over and over you need Jesus to help you. Its okay to ask God for help.
I think that this is saying that we should want to be a good person. If we aren’t we will not be well in God’s eyes. We need to try our hardest to do well in everything that we do. Even if we have obstacles we still need to strive to do good.
This piece of Scripture is telling me that God loves us unconditionally, but we just have to choose if we will accept His love or not. “Do you want to be well?” is like Jesus saying, “Do you want to be loved?” and it is our choice whether to accept His love or not.
I think this scripture is saying that we should try not to make excuses and that we should try to do things on our own.
This scripture was really good. A man was waiting for years and no one would help him. But Jesus noticed him and saw how kind he was and how understanding he was. So Jesus healed him and forgave him. One of the things I remember is Jesus told the man to never sin again so it doesn’t happen again.
what im getting from this is that Jesus healed a man that hasn’t been able to walk in years. God saw him and asked “Do you want to be well?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; while I am on my way, someone else gets down there before me. Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your mat, and walk. Immediately the man became well, took up his mat, and walked.” God was able to heal him. God is the only person that can heal you from everything you just have to belive in him. Get close to him.
This scripture was really good. A man was waiting for years and no one would help him. But Jesus noticed him and saw how kind he was and how understanding he was. So Jesus healed him and forgave him. One of the things I remember is Jesus told the man to never sin again so it doesn’t happen again.
This Scripture really reminds me of how much I want comfort and luxury and materialistic items. It’s like a trap that I fall into. That everyone at some point falls into. But reflecting, I realize how I shouldn’t be so much concerned as to what I get, as to the state of my soul. It reminds me of how suffering can bring me closer to Christ and how it’s not all bad. That doesn’t mean it’s fun or I want to suffer, rather it means I’m willing to if it’s the Father’s Will.
God teaches us to suffer by giving Himself up for us. We did nothing for him to die on the cross expect sin. That must feel like getting stabbed in the back for doing good when everyone else is doing bad. Imagine if that happen to us we would then think about our actions before we act on them.
Do we want Jesus to help us? Today in the gospel, Jesus asked the man if he wanted to be well and he gave him the ability to walk. Jesus may not give us what we think for us is good, but if we ask Him, he will help us. If we don’t want to strive for holiness, then how are we going to become a better person on earth and get to heaven? Jesus shows us how he healed the man who thought that going into the water was going to help him be able to walk. We may think that material things are going to make us happy, when Jesus is the only true one who can do that.
If you want to be well you have to work for it. You can’t just expect to be well. In life being well is earned.
We can’t make excuses for why we don’t go to mass, pray, give to the poor, etc. God always comes first and will always come first. God has put us first so the least we can do is put Him first.
I think this is saying that we have to make a decision, whether to be with him or not with him. He calls us to holiness and righteousness all we have to do is hear and answer.
The scripture is saying that God will do anything for us when we are going through hard times. God is always there with us and we need to know that when we need him all we have to do is talk to him. God loves us and will do anything that it takes to cure us.
Do you want to be well? Do you really want to be well? Or are you making excuses and letting everyone else do it for you. Are you waiting on someone? Making excuses? Or do you truly want to be well. You have a million changes in your day to grow in your faith and relationship with God. Are you? Are you trying to be happy with Jesus or are you making excuses? If you truly wanted to be well, you wouldn’t make excuses and grow closer to Jesus. Then you would be well.
When Jesus saw the man he knew he had suffered for more than 38 years. Jesus knew how much he has went through. If we go through pain we want it to be relieved. Jesus went through pain for us. He suffered for us. If we don’t want to suffer anymore then we should stop sinning.
In today’s gospel we are told about someone who made excuses, in all of the man’s years of illness he did not go to heal himself, and after Jesus does this for him, he goes carying his mat, and when he is approached by why he is carrying on the Sabbath he makes the excuse that Jesus told him to do it, we can not have excuses, we must take responsibility.
This scripture teaches us that we should never make excuses just because we might be “lazy” to do it or we just don’t want to and want someone to come to us and help. This scripture also teaches us to believe and have faith in Jesus. If it hadn’t been for Jesus, the man wouldn’t be able to rise from the mat and walk to the well that he has been next to for 38 years.
In this Gospel, Jesus says do you want to be well? To me this means that US humans on Earth need to take our life more serious with God and stop making excuses about everything. People in today’s world make excuses because they don’t want to do something. If a person truly wants to do something they won’t make excuses.
Excuses is being lazy, in our relationship with Jesus if we make excuses for not praying for a long time or something that is the worst thing to do. The man in the Gospel had 38 years to go to the well, God is there are whole life and we are making excuses why we are not praying?
The part that sticks out to me is that Jesus asks the man “Do you want to be well?”. He could have just healed him, but instead He asked if the man wanted to be well. God could have made us all love and be close to Him, but instead he gave us free will. We have to choose to follow and trust Him. So today you have to make your choice.
In today’s Gospel, I believe that Jesus is telling me that we should always take up our mat and follow the path that Jesus is on. For those who are baptized, we have Him in us. We are saved. But we shouldn’t take advantage over the freedom we have because sin still has consequences.
I think that this is telling me that if we chose not to be with God, then we won’t have eternal happiness. If we decide to stand up for what’s right and stand with Him, we will get everlasting happiness, eternal life, and to be with God in Heaven.
I think that this scripture is reminding us that God is power himself, and that he has the ability to do anything he thinks of, so we should respect him. That also reminded me that whatever we do to our friends we do to Jesus, whether you are being nice to them or angry with them, you’re being like that with God
This scripture Jesus heals a man who has been suffering for a long time. The man believed that Jesus would help him, and Jesus did. He saw how much he has suffered and went out of His way to ease his suffering. This reflects on how we suffer but also love God and believe in Him.
Do you want to be well. We do not need to make excuses. If we want to get something done we will get it done. If we don’t want to get something done than we will make excuses.
Today, Jesus asks someone if they want to be well. But then the man makes lots of excuses, saying why he should be well. This is bad
Today Jesus asks a man if he wants to be well. The man then procedes to make tons of excuses, justifying why he should be well. This isn’t good
What I think this is saying is that God will always give us what we want if we worship him and praise him. He will make us well if we praise him witch makes him well.
The man in the scripture today is a great example on how to be lazy and make excuses for your wrong doing. Like FR. Jared said in mass today there is no way he couldn’t get to the well or have someone bring him to the well when he was next to it for 38 years. We need to learn from him and not be lazy and also own up to our mistakes.
To me this means that God is asking us if we want to be well and good people to him. Now if we do not want to be well and or good to God then we will exiled to the depths of Hell where we will not feel the love or embrace of God or anyone and have to work in the fiery depths of Hell.
Jesus wants to heal us and make us better. But we have to humble ourselves and allow him to heal us, ask for the blessing of forgiveness.
I think that todays Gospel is telling me that if we want something from Jesus then we need to take our time and it won’t come super fast. It also will not come to you in the easiest way. It all takes time and a lot of faith. If you don’t have faith then He can’t heal us.
If we really want something then we are going to do whatever we can to get that thing. And the one thing that we should really want should be Jesus. We should be willing to do whatever Jesus asks of us, whenever he asks of it.
He is asking if we are well because he cares about us. He cares about us more than anyone ever will. He dearly loves us and we need to put him first above all things, our biggest distractions.
Jesus asks us today, “Do you want to be well?” The ill man had been there for 38 years and still had not yet been healed. Then he makes up an excuse to Jesus. He said, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; while I am on my way, someone else gets down there before me.” Why are we waiting for someone to take us to our destination. Jesus wants us to be with him, to love him, but it requires a response. It requires us to get up and pick up our map. So get up!
That man spent 38 years of his life in suffering. Jesus saved that man from his suffering. He can help us through our suffering.
I think that this reading is trying to prove to us how much the Jew’s wanted to condemn Jesus. They all got really mad about Jesus healing someone on the sabbath and said that doing that was unlawful. Think about how silly it sounds for someone to tell Jesus that he shouldn’t be healing people and changing their life forever. It is obvious how they are actually jealous that Jesus is truly the Son of God. We need to not be jealous and understand that some people have gifts that we do not and that we need to accept that and work with the gifts that we have.
“Love Christ back” We need to love Christ as he loves us.
I think this scripture is just like the homily that I heard in mass. The man was making excuses and saying that someone couldn’t carry him and someone would always get there before him
In this passage, Jesus sends us a message that He will always be there for us, even when the world isn’t. This reminds me that He will carry us, and hold us in the palm of His hand.
We procrastinate so much in life. We always have an excuse ready so we don’t have to pray, or spend time with God. We think it’s justified when we come up with an excuse we think is valid, but it’s not. We are wrong for that. We need to accept the fact that not praying can’t be justified. We know it’s wrong but we choose to do it anyway.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus cures a crippled man. But when Jesus asks the man if he wants to be healed, the crippled man gives him and excuse. Fr. Jarrod pointed this out today at Mass. We also make excuses a lot whenever we don’t want to take the blame for something. But Jesus can see into our hearts and know when we are not fessing up to what we did. We should all try to be more honest with ourselves and others.
Today’s scripture is about a man who could not walk over to the well to get water and nobody helped him for thirty-eight years. Jesus came by and healed the man who couldn’t walk and he told the man to go.
The gospel is telling me we use excuses for to many things. It is either we don’t want to do it or we do. When someone ask something we either need to say yes or no. We should go with what we want to do not make an excuse.
i think this scripture means that we have to trust in God but we also cant make excuses to just have God take care of us we have to take care of ourselves.
I think Jesus is telling us to stop being lazy. I feel like he is saying we need to get off our devices and go outside. We need to also get off our devices and pray not just go outside and do other stuff. We just need to go outside and go see God’s good green earth.
We can raise people up and get to know them and get close to them by helping them, and we can get close to God by preaching about Him to people.
jesu i all was her for us wen you are deff or blind o\or perlis
I think the scripture is saying that we need to trust in Jesus. He will heal us and take away our pain, and sorrow. I think it also says that even when we are sick we can’t make up excuses; same thing for when we are not. We should not make excuses for things, it just means we don’t want to do our tasks.
I think that this passage is telling us that if we want something, truly want it, we will find some way to make it happen, or we will find someone who can make it happen. If we don’t try very hard to be holy, we don’t truly want to get to Heaven. We may feel like we truly want to get to Heaven, but “Actions speak louder than words”
This scripture today is very meaningful and powerful. I think this scripture today is telling us that Jesus will always forgive us, but expects us to not be sinning as much after being forgiven. He knows that we make mistakes, but we should always try our best to do better the next time. When we go to confession we should not just sin right after or we are showing Him we truly don’t care about him.
I’m gonna take one word from Father’s homily today, and that is excuses. Wonderous things they are indeed. Not only are they wonderous, but they are also sort of a a bad thing. For example, the man in the gospel. He sat next to well for 38 years, and said that the reason he couldn’t go in was because someone was already in the well. Excuses don’t do you any good, so don’t make them.
I think that this scripture is trying to us that we should expect to suffer in life. When we suffer, we should always remember that Jesus suffered too. Even when Jesus suffered greatly, he was able to get back up and keep going. When we suffer, especially in our faith, we should learn to get up and keep going like Jesus did. God will help us overcome our suffering, we just need to talk and listen to him. If we establish a relationship with God and obey him, we will overcome the suffering and be rewarded with an eternal life in Heaven with Him.
This scripture is about a cripled man that made an excuse that he was sitting by this wll for 37 years and couldn’t find somebody to help him get to the realm, but 37 years you would have to be able to find someone to get you there. Most of the stories of Jesus someone that he heals always says some kind of excuse so Jesus will help him and this sounds a lot like us.
The Scripture is telling us that God will heal us no matter what. If we aren’t supposed to do any work God will still heal us. With God we come first rest comes last like when God created the world. For seven days he created animals, humans, and nature. The last day was rest. He didn’t stop in the middle of those seven days, He kept working.
We should never make excuses and always tell the truth to others just how the healed man came to the jews and told them about him being healed.
I think the Scripture is saying we make too many excuses. We make excuses because we do not want to do something. God will always know when we make excuses. We know that Jesus didn’t make excuses so we shouldn’t.
I think the gospel is about being lazy. Laziness is a bad thing. I keep you from doing your daily life when you lazy you forget to do the important things in our life like praying and going to mass we need to be less lazy.
This gospel is telling us to stop making excuses. We make so many excuses in our life just to get by and God just want’s us to own up to our mistakes. This is what I learned from today’s gospel.
As father Jarrod said this morning. Every makes excuses even the man had a excuse in this passage today. We need to stop making excuses.
The Gospel today is about a man that has been ill for 38 years. Then Jesus come along and saves him the man pick up his mat and walk away then people tell him not to pick his mat then he said Jesus told him. Then the scribes made fun of him.
Jesus came to Earth to fulfill God’s will by dying on the cross. That’s all.
In todays gospel God is telling me that we need to start trying to so thing before we give up and say it is impossible. You need to try everything that you want to do.
Today’s Scripture passage is saying that by making excuses that especially involve our relationship with God should be allowed. If we want to have a relationship with God we need to go to mass and pray, but by making excuses about it will draw you farther away from God. We need to be honest with ourselves. By telling ourselves that big problems are okay and making ourselves think otherwise, then we won’t be able to understand the things that are going on with our relationship with God. We need to know that He is there for us no matter what and He loves and cares for us very much, so I think we should show that to Him as well because He deserves our love.
Today the scripture is telling me that we need to want to be Holy. Being holy won’t just happen to us. We need to want it with all of our heart.
No matter your flaws, weaknesses, or wrongful doings, Jesus is there for you. He just wants us to come home to him.
“DO YOU WANT TO BE WELL?” do you want help from people and god. the only way to get help from god and people is to ask. us people are too scared to ask for help.we need help always ether mental or physically.
