During Lent, we are asked to reflect on the one event that changed human history forever, the Paschal Mystery-Jesus’ Passion, Death, and Resurrection. The foundation of this mystery is based on Jesus’ message in the Gospel today, forgiveness. Christianity is based on forgiveness. I struggle to forgive because I have a lot of pride and I am ultra competitive. At the heart of forgiveness is love! Fr. Jacques Philippe also made a very valid point on forgiveness. If we don’t forgive, we are chained to that person or a slave to the one who offended us or who we offended. They are constantly in our minds and we are not at peace. We can be stubborn for some time. We can give people the silent treatment or a cold shoulder for sometime. While we do this we are not at peace inside of us which is leading us away from God, our joy, because He is mercy. Jesus makes it very clear, “unless each of you forgive your brother from your heart” the Heavenly Father will not forgive you your debts. How can we possibly enter heaven as sinners? Humble yourself, accept your fallen human nature, pick up your cross and forgive others (7 x 70 times-always like the Heavenly Father does for you). Totally rely on God and trust in His mercy, “for with God anything is possible”. It is impossible to enter heaven unless we forgive! Ask God for His grace to help you forgive someone this Lent. If you are like me, it is probably the people closest to you who you love the most! Fight the Devil and forgive everyday if needed!
