Humbly submit your will to God and consecrate yourself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through the Immaculate Heart of Mary and Joseph.
Jesus’ father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;
and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,
“Behold, this child is destined
for the fall and rise of many in Israel,
and to be a sign that will be contradicted
and you yourself a sword will pierce
so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” Lk 2:33-35
Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother
and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,
and Mary Magdalene.
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved
he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.”
Then he said to the disciple,
“Behold, your mother.”
And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. Jn 19:25-27
Today, we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The most difficult cross to bear (I have heard and not experienced) is a parent who loses a son or daughter before they enter eternal life themselves. Mary experienced this great tragedy. We sometimes think since she is sinless, she did not have a hard life or suffer. Today, we are reminded that she experienced sorrow harder than any of us. Brant Pitre explains in his book “Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary” that Mary’s labor pains did not come at birth, but at the cross. The 7 sorrows she experienced are: 1. The Presentation in the Temple, 2. The Flight into Egypt, 3. The Loss of Jesus for 3 days, 4. The Way to Calvary, 5. The Crucifixion, 6. The Descent from the Cross, 7. The Burial of Jesus.
I have included a link to join your sorrows with Mary anytime you feel your cross is too heavy to bear in this life. God knows our hearts and our suffering and gave us perfect models, Jesus and Mary. Don’t suffer alone and remember this may be the way you may be called to perfection by God like His Son Jesus. If you become a saint, the rewards of suffering are eternal!

Acknowledging the pain and sorrow that Mary had when Jesus was crucified is important. As a parent, it’s extremely painful to watch your child die before you die. Even when she was sorrowful and sad when Jesus died, she still believed in God. This is a lesson, that even in the most painful times of our lives, we must keep our faith and stay close to God.
I think this is saying that Jesus is destined to die so that he can save us from our sin. Then he would rise up and go back to heaven.
The scripture is trying to tell us that Mary’s heart will be pierced from all the things that will happen in her life and will assume into heaven when she “dies” Mary’s heart was pierced 7 times by all the things that happened.
Seven “swords”. Sevend sorrows that Mary alone had to experience. She loved Jesus just like any other mother should love. She loved Jesus with all her heart, and each of the sorrows gave her greater and greater suffering. Mary was told that seven “swords” would pierce her heart. Mary and Joseph took Jesus to Egypt because He was going to be killed. They then loss Jesus for three days and found Him preaching. She had to watch her son, beaten, scourged, covered in blood and muck, wearing a crown of thorns that was shoved into His head, and carrying a heavy cross, walk towards the place where He was to be crucified. She then had to take Jesus down from the cross and take Him to a cave to bury Him. She went through one of the hardest things a mother can go through: having to bury their own child, and throughout all that time, she was in great pain and sorrow. She suffered pain and sorrow worse than most people will ever experience, but always know you can join your sorrows with Mary if you feel like your cross is getting too heavy. God gave us perfect examples, because although Mary was suffering seeing her own son being treated that way, she never once turned away from God.
Her life was incredibly tough. Felling the 7 swords and never turned from God, that’s amazing!
I think that this scripture is trying to point out that just because Mary was Jesus’ mother does not mean her life was easy,Her
son died and she felt so much pain through that moment that it felt like 7 swords went through her heart.
Mary loved Jesus so much that each sorrow the pain grew and grew until his death on the cross which is when she felt the 7 swords in her heart.
Mary loved Jesus so much that each sorrow the pain grew and grew until his death on the cross which is when she felt the 7 swords in her heart.
Mary loved Jesus so much and she had to experience 7 sorrows all the way from when Jesus was presented in the temple to when he was buried. Sometimes we think Mary was perfect and didn’t have to suffer but this reminds us that she suffered more than we ever have.
After reading this scripture I learned that Mary and Jesus suffered a LOT. I know that they love us though, and that they would do anything for us. I hope I always remember that I can go to them if I am struggling and need their help. Life is hard, but it will be so worth it in the end. Prayer will always be a Holy solution when you don’t know where to go next in life. Stay strong Vikings.
I have been struggling a lot. In the past and right now. I know that Mary is watching over me and enduring my suffering with me. She will give me the strength and bravery to keep going.
I think that this is saying that Mary loved Jesus so much. He was the most important thing to her because he was a gift from God and Mary was chosen to carry Jesus in her womb. But because she loved Jesus so much she then had seven sorrows. And 7 swords pierced many hearts. That is why this is so important because Mary had the most Amazing thing happen to her yet she still was filled with 7 sorrows.
Through all the pain that Mary went through she still kept going. We shouldn’t give up because Mary didn’t.
I feel like the Gospel is telling us today that we need to take care of each other as we would take care of our own families. “Treat your neighbor as you would treat yourself” This quote is exactly how Jesus wanted us to treat each other while He was here, and it’s how He wants us to treat others now. Take care of others. Lift them up, not break them down.
7 swords of Mary. She had to go through the bad and the good all alone. Behold, this child is destined
for the fall and rise of many in Israel,
and to be a sign that will be contradicted
and you yourself a sword will pierce
so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” I cant imagine how much pain this was. She was so Humble and she had to go through this still… I thank her for everything she has done because of how much she had to do with pain and suffering.
We always remember Jesus suffering, but we don’t realize how much Mary suffered also. “and you yourself a sword will pierce
so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” She would see her Son die in front of her eyes. And she felt His pain. She suffered almost as much as Christ did. We can’t imagine what that felt like. She couldn’t help Him because she knew what he was doing for us. It’s hard to think about how she still loves us even after what we did to her Son. Mary is our mother, and she loves us very much, just like she loved Jesus. I think we should think about who we are hurting when we sin.
“Behold, your mother.” Mary is our spiritual mother, and so, she loves us like a mother, with unconditional love. She will take your petitions to Jesus, and she will pray for you whenever you need her to. She is our mother too.
The scripture is trying to tell us that Mary’s heart will be pierced from all the things that will happen in her life and will assume into heaven when she “dies” Mary’s heart was pierced 7 times by all the things that happened.
I think this piece of Scripture can be very helpful in our daily lives. A lot of times, it doesn’t cross our minds that Mary suffered too. She suffered a lot. Seven swords, what does that symbolize? Well we know that getting pierced in the heart with a sword would probably hurt, and the heart part is also important. It symbolizes immense heartbreak. It shows that her life wasn’t easy as most think it would be. We can also look to her for comfort as a mother to console us when we are struggling.
This that any time that we have a struggle in our life we should pray to Our Lady of Sorrows
Losing a family member is hard. Everyone’s going to experience it at some point. But Mary’s sorrow was so great, her heart was pierced by 7 swords. I also think the sword 7 swords somehow represents the 7 deadly sins.
We should turn to God when we are going through a hard time and keep going because Mary kept going even though she suffered so much in her life and she became a role model.
Even though Mary struggled so much throughout her life, she kept going and turned to God so why wouldn’t we? We should turn to Him even in our darkest times. Hi! I hope you’ve had an amazing day!
Thanks Emily! My attitude stinks today, but it has been a good day. Hope all is well and praying for you! Mr. G
Mary, the mother of Jesus, suffered greatly but she kept going. We should remember that God is with us to help us carry our crosses and struggle. We should turn to Jesus when we are struggling.
