Humbly submit your will to God and consecrate yourself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases,
and he sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God
and to heal the sick.
He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey,
neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money,
and let no one take a second tunic.
Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there.
And as for those who do not welcome you,
when you leave that town,
shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.”
Then they set out and went from village to village
proclaiming the good news and curing diseases everywhere. Lk 9:1-6
Jesus teaches two important things today. He can give whoever he wants power and authority over demons, the ability to heal, or anything else he wants. This means that through Apostolic Succession (tracing Pope Francis back to St. Peter) and laying on of hands, Jesus has given power and authority to those who are ordained to lead the Church.
Second, Jesus teaches us to take nothing for the journey. What material baggage are we carrying with us that is keeping us from totally and completely loving God or could be leading us away from God. It could be money, electronics, overindulgence, unnecessary material things. On our journey to sainthood will have to conquer the world, our flesh, and the devil. It will require fasting, praying, and giving alms. Take nothing for the journey and trust totally and completely in God. Ouch, I have a lot of work to do!
Today’s challenge: Give to the poor in your home, school, community. Anyone who needs something is poor. Be humble, live with a poor spirit that recognizes each day we need God and to put Him first before everything. Work on one part of your personality that is hindering you from becoming more holy. Reflect on what material thing(s) are taking you away from God. Take small steps to rid yourself from this material item.
Be a servant, become a saint!
