St. Paul gives us great advice on how we should behave and speak in today’s first reading, “Brothers and sisters:
Be kind to one another, compassionate,
forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.

Be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love,
as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us
as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma.
Immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you,
as is fitting among holy ones,
no obscenity or silly or suggestive talk, which is out of place,
but instead, thanksgiving.
Be sure of this, that no immoral or impure or greedy person,
that is, an idolater,
has any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and of God.”  Eph 4:32-5:8

“No obscenity (talking about a guy or girl in an impure way) or silly or suggestive talk, which is out of place, but instead, thanksgiving.”  Some of us speak this way on Facebook, SnapChat, Twitter, or when we are together.  The F-bomb flies like it is okay and cussing is rampant.  Talking about people’s bodies in impure ways is suggestive talk.  Many of us talk this way because we think it makes us sound older or cooler.  No adult that talks this way (including those who sing on the radio or rap) is favored in the eyes of God.  Your speech shows where your heart is. What a more peaceful world it would be if young and adults spoke thanksgiving instead of cussing and suggestive talk!

Jesus Cures a Woman on the Sabboth today in the Gospel and the leader of the Synogogue is irate.  Jesus knows that having compassion (care for another, unselfishness) anytime is more important than a law and God’s laws obviously do not contradict themselves.  The leader of the synagogue was embarassed.  May we not get too caught up in the doctrines of our faith, but first be an example of Christ and show compassion to all of God’s people anytime, anywhere!  Doctrine and laws can come later!
