Jesus teaches us a very important lesson today, especially those of us who have much. He says, “No servant can have two masters. He will either love one or hate the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (material things).”

It is very interesting this Gospel message came up today. I had a pair of Nike Elite socks a student left in my room and I was amazed how many kids’ eyes lit up when they saw them. I spend every year trying to get kids excited about Mass, the Word of God, and Spiritual books, basically Jesus! I looked up a couple things about Nike Elite socks. They cost $14-$20 and are very popular. Nike who mainly care about your money, makes these for I’m only guessing under $2. We don’t care because they are popular and we will find a way to get the money for a pair. One young boy in a NY Times article mowed several lawns so he could have several pairs. I even found an article discussing whether Elite socks and LeBron or Jordan shoes make a person a better athlete. Are you serious? I, of course, fell into this Nike trap growing up. My brother and I had some sweet Jordan’s and of course they made us play better (in our minds) and be cool among our friends. I had a lot of K-mart shoes before my dad’s business becme successful.

What’s the point? For us that have been blessed with much, Jesus warns us we must enter through the narrow gate (eye of a needle) which is Him to enter heaven. We can easily be distracted by material things and even worship them like a false god. Jesus warns us that we must use our wealth to help others not to be popular or fit in! What a difficult teaching!

Don’t forget we can’t hide our hearts or the truth from God for Jesus says, “You justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts.”
